As a Christian, are you allowed to want and work towards becoming the best in the world at something?

Hi!

Thank you for asking this question.

Working to become the best in the world at something is not wrong, even if you are a Christian. Wanting to use your natural abilities and gifts is only positive. God created us with these abilities, and if He didn't want us to use them, He probably wouldn't have given them to us. So, it's positive to learn more and get better at what you're good at.

However, it's important that working towards this goal is not at the expense of living a Christian life. If you're doing something you think is fun, it can quickly become a kind of idol, becoming more important in your life than God Himself. But as long as you don't push God aside and stop including Him in your daily life, it's great to use the gifts He has given you!

So, it's not about becoming the best at something, which is right or wrong in itself, but what that focus can lead to in your life. Whether it's sport or education, hobbies or a job we want to focus on, it might be wise to write down the following Bible verses and include them in our evaluations and priorities. When we belong to the Lord, the purpose of everything we do is to

point to Him and give Him glory.

1 Cor 6:12, 15, 19-20. I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?  Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies.

2 Cron 31:20-21. This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah, doing what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his God. In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.

Col 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
