I want to start a Bible group. Do you have any advice?

It’s great that you want to start a Bible group!

You have already come part of the way as you have a group of people who want to join the group. Seven people is enough to make a good start. It’s maybe a good idea that the group is not too big, so that you get to know each other, and everyone can have a chance to say something. Perhaps the maximum size for the group should be about twelve people?

You could start the Bible group by having something to eat together. Make some simple food, or perhaps everyone could bring a dish? Eating together and having a chat can be a good icebreaker.

It could be a good idea if you decide in advance what you will do in the Bible group. There might be a plan with questions that you could follow? Some Christian organisations or churches might have a plan that you can use to start good conversations about the Bible and what it means to be a Christian. Perhaps you could start with one question in the first Bible group meeting? You could also watch some videos from The Bible Project channel on YouTube, this will help you to understand the Bible better. After that you could discuss it and ask each other questions about what you have seen. Or perhaps you could decide to read a Christian book you think is exciting, and go through it together? One way to do it would be to have ‘homework’ where you read one chapter of the book before the next Bible group and then talk about it together.

It is also important that you get to know each other better, and that you emphasise that everyone can be themselves. At the very start of the meeting, you can say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and that people should not be afraid of saying something ‘wrong’. Be honest and tell each other how you are really doing, and what is difficult. Promise each other that what is said in the group remains in the group ,and will not be told to others. By doing this you create freedom and it is a safe place for people to be. Pray for each other and show care when someone is going through a tough time. Pray at the start that God would lead you through the Bible group and pray for each other at the end.
