I’m 12 and don’t have any boobs

Hi, I’m a girl of 12. I don’t have any boobs, but all the other girls in my class do. One time a girl went with small footballs under her jumper, and I looked at her a bit strange as they were very big. A boy walked beside her and looked at me, and teased me because I didn’t have boobs. I got quite sad and asked my mum why I don’t have any boobs. She told me that she got boobs when she was 15. Then I got a bit scared, isn’t it embarrassing to go to high school with no boobs? Should I use fake boobs? I was going to buy a swimsuit one time, but all the swimsuits for my age had space for boobs. I had to buy a swimsuit that was a bit smaller. Is there anything wrong with my body?
Best wishes from a girl of 12.

Hi girl of 12!

The age you get boobs depends on when you reach puberty. This varies a lot from person to person, but for girls puberty often starts about 10–12 years (but also later). Puberty is usually finished by the time girls are 15–17. Boobs usually grow about two years after the first menstruation, and for a lot of girls they are not finished growing until they are almost 18. So it sounds like your body is totally normal. When it comes to the way the body develops, most things are normal as we are all so different. Using fake boobs or getting stressed because you are not quite the same as others, is very tiring. If you look carefully, you will probably notice that the others in your class are different from each other. The best thing to do is to accept the body you have and let your boobs develop in their own time.

There is no reason to be embarrassed about the size of your boobs, not now nor in high school. (Although it is unfortunately very normal to think that you are not as good as others). There are lots of swimsuits for your age without special space for boobs, so we recommend that you go to another shop, or buy online.

It could be good to talk to the school nurse if you have any questions about your body. It’s also important that you tell your mother or another adult at school if you get hurtful comments from other pupils.

You can read more about boobs and when it is normal to get them here: A Short Boob Guide for Girls

You are not alone in being worried about whether you are normal, and that you have questions about boobs, so you can read the answers to these questions which other girls have sent in previously:
