Irritable when I get my period

Hello! I'm a 13-year-old girl and I've found out that when I have my period I am completely empty and mad at everyone and everything. I do not know what for, but I go around and snarl and feel angry and grumpy for no reason. When I have my period and am at church, I just wonder why I'd been so stupid as to go. Why is this happening? Is there anything I can do to stop me getting so angry? Is it normal to be that way?

Hello!

It is really common to experience discomfort before and during menstruation, but how bad you feel is individual. You can, for example, sweat more, have cramps and contractions in the tummy, feel sick, get diarrhea, feel like you've got no energy, or have mood swings. Mood swings may get you to feel really so happy one moment, and the next feel like bursting into tears, - or getting furious with everyone around you. It varies from girl to girl how powerful your symptoms are and how much discomfort you have, but most people go through these mood swings that you talk about. They happen during menstruation in particular, because your body is being flooded with hormones.

In any case, mood swings are very common when you're in your teens, but they generally get better after a few years.

The best thing you can do is to stay in good physical shape. Having a healthy lifestyle - where you try to avoid stress. Do some exercise daily and get enough sleep and rest. When you feel yourself starting to get annoyed, try to take a little time-out and go on your own and sit somewhere. Think through whether you do have something to be annoyed about, in fact. Is someone around you actually doing something wrong? If you don't find the answer in things going on around you, maybe you want to consider what might be devastating your mood. Maybe it's not enough sleep - or maybe it really is menstrual cycle causing your moods.

First and foremost, we recommend that you tell your parents how you feel, and feel free to ask about it at your school's health care service.

All the best,
