Want to wear girl's clothes and be a girl

I am fairly certain that I was born in the wrong body. I want to wear girl's clothes and be a girl, but the problem is I don't get my parents' permission to do it. We are a Christian family and my parents think it is wrong to change gender. What should I do? I can't handle living like a boy anymore. If I can't become a girl, I want to take my own life.

Hello and thank you for your question.

We understand that this is a very difficult situation that is demanding to live with. When you say that you can't handle living as a boy anymore and that you want to take your own life, these are strong words. When something feels so difficult, it is very important not to live with this alone. We would strongly encourage you to seek help from someone you can talk to. You write that you are a Christian family, and we therefore perceive that you also consider yourself a Christian. It may be good for you to talk to a priest, pastor or Christian counselor who can understand you and also talk about the things that are about faith, your relationship with God and your Christian family. If you do not know of any such people to talk to, it is also possible to call helplines or contact chat services.

You don't write anything about how long you've had it or how old you are. There are some people who have had such an experience as you describe for as long as they can remember, for others these are feelings that can appear when they reach adolescence. It is actually relatively common for young people to have a period where they are unsure of their own gender identity.

For some these are transient feelings that disappear before they become adults, for others it is experienced more constantly over time.

The way you describe your situation, we understand that it can feel impossible to imagine that these feelings will change. We do not know you and cannot predict what will happen to your emotions in the years ahead. A survey in the United States showed that as many as 9 out of 10 children who wished they were the opposite sex did not have the same feelings when they grew up. Professionals also have a very high threshold for providing treatment that changes the body to resemble the opposite sex, whether it is through hormones or operations. It is important to be aware that such treatment can never completely change the body from male to female or vice versa. Even if the body becomes more like the opposite sex, one will never be able to have children, and all the cells in the body still have chromosomes(kjønnskromosomer) that correspond to the sex one was born with. Once you have done something as radical as undergoing such treatment, there is no going back either.

So no matter how difficult this may be, there are no easy solutions. Therefore, it is most important that you first of all find someone to talk to who can stand with you now that you are having such a difficult time.
