A wedding is a ceremony in which a man and a woman get married, there is usually a party to celebrate the fact that the man and woman are now a couple. Although the Biblical understanding of marriage is between one man and one woman, in some countries now people of the same gender can get married and celebrate their wedding.

In many countries people have traditionally been married in church, by a priest, and it is still very common for a priest or other spiritual leader to conduct the marriage. Many people choose to have a civil wedding, where the ceremony is conducted by a civil official in the town hall or registrar’s office. In a Christian wedding ceremony the man and woman promise to love each other:

‘for better, for worse,

for richer, for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish,

till death us do part’.

This means that marriage is meant to last a lifetime and that the couple are committed to being faithful to each other always.
